Earth Hour 2008


The Lotus-Heart will hold a candlelit Earth Hour evening this Saturday from 6 to 10pm with accoustic music. Outside in the Square, as part of Earth Hour, a free outdoor movie, The 11th Hour, is being screened in Cathedral Square on Saturday 29 March, 2008, at 8.00 to 10.00pm.

In the Square from 7.00pm will be a range of sustainability related organisations giving down-to-earth tips on how to reduce your environmental footprint. At 8.00pm Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker will introduce the movie and turn-off the lights of the Cathedral to commemorate the beginning of Earth Hour.

Orion New Zealand will monitor the city's power use during Earth Hour to measure how much electricity was saved.

People in 24 cities around the world plan to switch out their lights and turn off their appliances from standby from 8pm to 9pm on Saturday. As many as 30 million people are tipped to switch off lights and televisions around the world to help fight climate change with 24 cities joining Earth Hour on March 29, environment group WWF said.

Prime Minister Helen Clark launched Christchurch's Earth Hour 2008 campaign.
